Through the Sharing Indigenous Knowledge webinar series, Loyalist College in partnership with Bioenterprise, provides a platform to help raise awareness and understanding related to the valuable role of Indigenous knowledge and entrepreneurship within the current economy.

The second webinar in the series was moderated by Jennifer Tewathahá:kwa Maracle, Loyalist College Director of Indigenous Services, and featured Amberly Quakegesic sharing her journey as the manager of the Guardian program at Wahkohtowin.

The Guardian program is designed to strengthen Indigenous youth’s connections to their land, language, culture and community through land-based learning. 

“We recognize the challenges and opportunities facing our Communities in environmental and resource management. We want to be leaders and changemakers for our Communities. And this starts with our youth. We want to learn our old ways and share knowledge to create innovative environmental solutions. With guidance from our Elders and Cultural Advisors we developed a set of principles to guide our Guardians,” says Quakegesic.

G-Pharma Collaborates with CNPMC to Transform Ginseng Extract for Wider Customer Acceptance

G-Pharma, an Ontario-based Canadian company specializing in concentrated American Ginseng extract, partnered with the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis (CNPMC) to change the production of their concentrated liquid form into a dry powder form, which would be more suitable to a majority of customers.

With the help of researcher Barb Allen from Loyalist College, they were able to achieve the first goal of their project to create a successful product for the market.

G-Pharma is an Ontario-based Canadian company and our flagship GinEx products are deep processed and concentrated American Ginseng extract made from Ontario-grown American Ginseng roots, which are available in 30ml, 100g, and 240g bottles.

GinEx contains high concentration of ginsenosides and poly-saccharides and is specifically designed to have very high absorption rate, making it highly effective at reducing stress, improving strength, focus and boosting the immune system.  GinEx is a Canadian Licensed Natural Health Product (NPN) and is produced by a GMP-certified pharmaceutical company in Canada.

Our mission is to innovate the ginseng market, by bringing new generations of measurable, high quality, and effective Canadian ginseng products to market. By changing the perspective of ginseng, we strive to elevate Canadian ginseng products to global markets. Within five to ten years, we will have several value-added American ginseng products in North American markets and our goal is to have our products become the major exported forms of Ontario produced American ginseng roots.

Tell us about why you came to the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis.

We are a member of Natural Products Canada (NPC) and we read about the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis in the NPC newsletter and thought that the CNPMC might provide the technical supports that would solve our problems and help us save time and money.

Our concentrated and pure forms of American ginseng products are liquid. They are very strong and effective but also have a very strong bitter taste. We needed to increase market acceptability in order to achieve our goals and find a way to deliver the products more easily and effectively, in a format accepted by a majority of customers. To do so, we investigated changing production of our products from concentrate liquid form into a dry powder form.

Dry ginseng powder can be used in different ways; concentrated ginseng powder can be used to make tablets, capsules and even mixed with other herb extracts to make different forms of products containing high quality ginseng extracts.

This high-quality ginseng extract will help us to reach more customers. Not only will retail customers accept this form of product, we can also sell our products to industrial customers in health food sectors and cosmetic sectors. Furthermore, we can use this ginseng extract powder to make value-added ginseng products that will help export of Ontario produced American ginseng roots, which will help the Ontario ginseng industry over the long run. 

Tell us about your experience.

Working with Loyalist College is a very pleasant experience. Carly Kelly, who is the Manager, took the time to understand our project and what we needed. We then met with Researcher Barb Allen to work out a detailed plan to solve our business problem. Her expertise and dedication towards this project really stood out. She helped us identify the proper methodology, found great solutions and provided us with great results.

Tell us about the results.

We worked on this project with a private company before but ended up with no results. Working with Loyalist College through the wet granulation process, we were able to obtain dry ginseng powder from our liquid ginseng product. We have achieved the goal for our first stage and now in the next stage we are looking for results that can quantify the powder.

Working with Loyalist College has been great, and we believe our collaboration will result in a successful product to market.

Tell us about why you came to the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis.

Customer experience is at the centre of all we do. bathintentions wants to offer the best relaxation experience to its customers so we approached the CNPMC to support us in reformulating our flagship shower steamers to prolong the length of each disk. Innovating this market will enable our small company to compete not only Nationally, but also on the International market.

 

Tell us about your experience.

bathintentions has benefitted from invaluable expertise from the CNPMC. The team has introduced ingredients that can truly impact the quality of the product and has offered their knowledge and expertise to support us. But more importantly, they have also given us confidence to initiate contributing to the research and development process.

Communication has been fluid and has shaped the project as we have progressed towards the perfect product. We have learned so much about bringing a product to market; we have discussed the many challenges faced for a small company scaling up with limited resources and felt that the team is truly available for us.

 

Tell us about the results.

Our first project completed with the CNPMC increased the duration of the shower steamers to expand to more than one use, including the manufacture of a new modified release and new formulation with disintegration/dissolution characteristics to last for multiple shower applications.

The current project involves further development of the multi-use shower steamer to optimize size, friability and cost of ingredients. The target is to achieve the same aromatic quality in a formulation that is not breakable after drying and packaging.

Shamsa and Kaltum, the co-founders of Afiya Beauty, approached the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis (CNPMC) to incorporate upcycled organic waste materials into their formulations to create a unique and effective product that addresses a common skin concern for their customers.

Working with the team at Loyalist College, they were able to research and develop a new technology that supports their mission of creating sustainable skincare products and differentiates their business within the clean beauty space.

Tell us your company story.

My name is Shamsa and together with my sister Kaltum, we are the co-founders of Afiya Beauty. At Afiya, we are committed to using new technology and conscious manufacturing practices to develop plant extracts from recovered waste. Our goal is to be a leader in this field, developing high-performance inclusive skincare products sustainably produced with low environmental impact.

 

Tell us about why you came to the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis.

Upcycling is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials or discarded objects into new materials or products. Food and beverage waste represent the main source of materials that can be upcycled into beauty products since these materials contain food grade ingredients with rich properties for the skin. Currently, the upcycled cosmetics market is mainly represented by scrubs, oils and soaps however; our company is researching how to use upcycled ingredients to make sophisticated serums, rich in vitamins and antioxidants that solve our customers most pressing skincare concerns.

We were referred by GreenCentre Canada to the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis to help us incorporate using organic waste materials into our formulations. Research performed at Loyalist validated that fresh produce has vast amounts of enzymes, vitamins and active ingredients that can be extracted and converted into high- performance extracts that can be used in cosmetics.

Our goal is to use these high-performance natural extracts from food waste to create a unique and effective product that addresses a common skin concern in a safe, non-toxic and environmentally friendly way. We want to rely less on foreign ingredients and to be able to sustainably create an ecosystem that is closer to home.

 

Tell us about your experience.

Working with the team at Loyalist has been such a great experience for our start -up. We found it really easy to communicate our vision and the team was instrumental at helping bring our innovative product to market. We would highly recommend the CNPMC to any start-up/SME looking to develop, scale up and commercialize their ideas with the added bonus of transforming the results of research into high-quality products. We are super happy with the results of our formulations and look forward to working on more product lines in the future.

The project helped Afiya to research and develop a new technology that can be integrated within our products and supports our mission of creating environmentally and socially sustainable skincare products. Cheekbone Beauty celebrates Indigenous culture and teachings that place a particular emphasis on the deep connection to nature and the land lived on. This can be seen through Cheekbone Beauty’s focus on using sustainably sourced ingredients and minimal waste packaging.

“As Indigenous people we have an innate connection to the land, earth, and water,” says Jenn Harper. “We use concepts from Indigenous wisdom married with western science to make and create products, and to think of how we’re putting products into the world and how we want to be a part of a new way of doing business. We know our ancestors constantly watched and mimicked nature without wasting anything. As a brand, we can’t mimic nature perfectly, but we do our best to try.”

Loyalist College and GreenCentre Canada Support SME's Success in the Bioeconomy

Belleville, Ontario, Nov. 24, 2022 – Loyalist College’s Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis (CNPMC) received $75,000 through GreenCentre Canada’s CONNECT program to help five companies bring sustainable products to market. This is the second consecutive year that Loyalist has secured GreenCentre CONNECT funds to support the growth and development of regional businesses in the bioproducts or cleantech sectors.  

“Loyalist College remains committed to supporting the future-proofing of local industries and driving regional economic and social development that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” said Mark Kirkpatrick, Acting President of Loyalist College. “We’re excited to build on the success of last year’s GreenCentre CONNECT projects by supporting five more businesses as they transition to more sustainable and efficient practices. Led by the expert researchers in our CNPMC, each project will create unparalleled work-integrated learning opportunities for students while they earn industry experience and solve real-world business problems.”  

Supported by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP), GreenCentre’s CONNECT program assists start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by connecting them with specialized research and development service providers like the CNPMC, and funding up to $15,000 per project in the bioproducts or cleantech sectors.

With GreenCentre’s support, Loyalist College is supporting the following five companies: 

Biomimetics is a biopharma research company focused on synthesizing and commercializing rare terpenoid molecules. Their primary interest lies in investigating molecules with novel biological activity that have remained widely unused or unnoticed by clinical researchers due to a lack of commercial availability. Using novel chemistry techniques, Biomimetics looks to bridge this gap and bring proven molecules to a world in need. The Biomimetics–Loyalist College collaboration involves the extraction of rare phytochemicals from various species of plants. The project will develop a supercritical CO2 extraction route with the goal of replacing current solvent extraction methodologies. 

BodyHarmony Therapies and Wellness was started in 1998 on the foundation of holistic health principles and the use of phytochemical extracts and concentrated essential oil formulations. The company’s goal is to formulate wellness products using aromatic plant extracts and cannabinoids to create reliable treatments for people in discomfort and daily pain. The project’s primary focus will be developing a CBG, and selective terpene-infused topical product.  

FireRein has been operating since 2012 and developed the first 100% naturally sourced fire suppression gel, Eco-Gel.™ This project will further evaluate the formulation stability of the Eco-Gel product to meet the needs of the wildland fire sector using the particle size reduction equipment and advanced environmental chambers at Loyalist College. These tests will inform product readiness for USDA Forest Services Qualified Products List (QPL) testing, and general product shelf life for existing markets. 

Kimberlite Group Limited is a Canadian company specializing in natural products technology under the banner of Valley of Gold Farms in Deloro, Ontario. Kimberlite Group Limited is expanding their product stream to grow and sell hops as a specialized seasonal fresh/wet product to regional brewers. This project aims to increase the value-add of their products through innovative green technology, especially as it applies to post-harvest hop processing. This study will also determine the feasibility of fractional steam extraction of terpenes from hops to create an essential hop oil product. 

Token Naturals is an independent Canadian company that manufactures cannabis products for partners and consumers in the recreational market. Founded in 2016, Token Naturals has focused on securing licenses for producing, selling, and researching cannabis products in the extracts and dried flower categories. Their current project focuses on developing a concentrated THC nano-emulsion using all-natural ingredients and surfactants that can be added to finished products without compromising THC potency or quality.

Loyalist College Helps Seven Business to Grow and Develop the Bioeconomy

Belleville, Ontario, September 19, 2022 –  Loyalist College’s Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis is helping seven companies grow and develop innovative natural products and processes through its COLLABORATE program, funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) new Applied Research and Technology Partnership grants (ARTP).  

“On behalf of Loyalist College, I’d like to thank NSERC for their additional support as we expand our sustainability focused research collaborations with small and medium-sized (SMEs) enterprises across the region,” said Mark Kirkpatrick, Acting President of Loyalist College. “This funding will empower the College to create unparalleled work-integrated learning opportunities for students where they can help SMEs solve real-world challenges and advance the bioeconomy.” 
 
As a recent signatory on the UN Sustainable Development Goals Accord, Loyalist continues to identify opportunities to integrate the SDGs into its academic programming, applied research, and campus initiatives. By supporting SMEs with the development of new sustainable technologies in the bioeconomy the College and its partners are collectively working to advance SDG #12 Ensuring Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns. For SMEs, enhancing their sustainable practices and procedures requires advanced commercial and technical expertise, but accessing this support during the research and development phase can be challenging for small businesses. Loyalist’s COLLABORATE program is solving this problem by providing $440,000 of funding over two years for SMEs to work with the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis to accelerate development of their bio-based products and services.

In the first year of the program, Loyalist has allocated NSERC’s ARTP COLLABORATE funding for projects with the following companies: 
 
Afiya Beauty develops and sells clean, all-natural beauty products through their online store. This project will look to develop an extract from apple pomace to be incorporated into cosmetic products.  
 
Black and Blue Foods is a company focused on using natural products to treat chronic medical conditions. They are currently working on a natural health product to treat inflammation. Through funding from its COLLABORATE program, the Centre will create a design of experiment protocol for the manufacturing parameters to define the approach for the formula.  
 
Cold Plasma Group Inc. is developing a patent-pending, sterilization technology for the cannabis industry. This technology consists of cold plasma processing cycles, tailored to be effective at reducing the microbial contamination on cannabis products, yet gentle towards product quality and chemical composition. This project will perform prototype “field” testing that will facilitate the implementation of the technology under typical customer operational conditions. 
 
Finda Beauty Care is an aesthetic and hair care centre that provides beauty services to those with sensitive skin and/or those sensitive to strong scents. This project will assist in the development of a unique, natural, low- to no-fragrance product to moisturize very dry skin during the winter months.   
 
MediPharm Labs is a pharmaceutical company specializing in cannabinoids. This project will evaluate the suitability of a technological methodology to isolate THC of pharmaceutical purity from the distillate input, and will also make recommendations on scale-up to commercial processing. 
 
Terra Plant is a Toronto-based startup in synthetic biology, which has developed a proprietary plant-based production system that can be used to produce small molecules and proteins faster, cheaper and with greater scalability. The technology is highly adaptable and can produce multiple products including vaccines, insulin, vitamins, biofuels and protein supplements. This project will build and validate a prototype and minimum viable product for a cannabinoid production system.  
 
Vive Crop Protection is a Canadian crop protection technology company that creates Precision Chemistry to expand the horizons of Precision Agriculture. Using the Allosperse® Delivery System, Vive greatly improves the targeting and performance of chemical and biological active ingredients, helping growers achieve better results. This project expands on initial proof-of-concept work to investigate the ability of Vive’s Allosperse polymers to disperse non-polar chemicals in water.

Loyalist College Joins Partners to Lead Ontario's Bio-Cleantech Sector

Belleville, Ontario, August 15, 2022 – As a member of the new, federally-funded Canadian Bio-Cleantech Applied Research Network (CBARN), Loyalist College is proud to support Canada’s transition to a green economy. Founded in partnership with Lambton College, Fanshawe College and Mohawk College, CBARN has received a $3-million investment from the FedDev Ontario Jobs and Growth Fund to support research and advancement in the bio-cleantech sector.  

“[This] investment reinforces the Government of Canada’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through supporting projects that pave the way for a cleaner future, contributing to a resilient economy and the generation of good green jobs,” said the Honourable Helena Jaczek, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. “Through the Canadian Bio-Cleantech Applied Research Network, 65 bio-based SMEs will be able to increase their competitiveness, products and customer base, grow their business and increase their workforce, boosting Canada’s green economy for years to come.”  

Members of CBARN will work together to provide bio-cleantech businesses with a full range of specialized facilities, infrastructure and expertise to help expand their products and optimize their processes. This collaborative approach offers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access to invaluable research and innovation support through one centralized channel.

Companies registered with a business number who have operations in Southern Ontario are eligible to participate. CBARN projects will include bio-based cleantech solutions, bio-based products and processes, natural health products, and sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

Meet Our Research Team – Josh Powles

Josh Powles — Researcher & Biosciences Professor at Loyalist College — attending the weekly meeting at the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis.

Josh Powles is a Researcher at the Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis and has been teaching at Loyalist College since 2014.

Josh grew up in the Quinte area in Ontario, and part of his lifestyle encouraged him to interact with nature, pushing his initial interest in sciences/biology.

His attraction to research became stronger when Josh stumbled upon the use of a protein during his PhD, which opened a pathway to the development of intellectual property.

While working on this potential technology, he collaborated on multiple projects related to cancer treatments, antibiotic resistance, biofilm development, and genetic modification of various organisms.

Josh is now working with tissue culture and molecular techniques at the Centre – striving to master new ways to grow and develop plants for the creation of drugs and other biomolecules.

He is very passionate about molecular biology and believes that people can find solutions to almost anything by studying and understanding our environment, plants and animals. That is why Josh is also committed to Drinking Water Source Protection, serving as a Quinte Region Source Protection Committee member through the Quinte Conservation Authority.

Josh received his Master of Science (MSc) and PhD in Molecular Biology from Queens University.

You are a professor and a researcher. What is the most challenging thing about your dual role?
Balancing the two is intrinsically tough.

When I have free time, I must balance the development of projects and my lessons. Luckily, since I am teaching within the same realm of my research, I am able to bridge the two aspects of my job together.

Another hard situation is providing students opportunities past my classes, with finite student research placements. I always want to provide conditions to grow and develop within research to every one of my students.

What do you like most about doing research?
Research allows me the opportunity to push myself and learn more about a topic, and new techniques.

In addition, research allows me to maintain my skill set, and it provides me with the ability to learn novel skills that I can implement into my teaching.

I am able to network with industry experts, understand what types of jobs and skills they are pursuing and help develop those within my courses.

What inspired you to become involved in research?
Molecular biology and genetics have always been interesting and exciting fields for me. When I was completing my undergrad, I met a professor who shared similar interests and had the same passion I had developed.

This naturally pulled me into an honours project and the pathway to grad school. Seeing my work advance a field within molecular biology became addictive, pushing me to learn more and develop studies.

Did you have a teacher at school, college or university that inspired you and if so, how?
My high school biology teacher was the first to push and develop my passion for biology. When in university, my supervisor was the one that really pushed me and allowed me to learn so much about the topic. He became more than just an instructor, taking on a mentor-like role in my life.

How would you encourage your students to become involved in research?
Being open about my passion and excitement in research is the first step. I get to know my students, what they are interested in, and what topics they like most, and incorporate this into my lessons.

This pushes me to learn more about their interests and challenges me to build upon their passion within my courses.

What would you tell your students are the most important skills of a researcher?
Follow what you like the most. Being passionate in your field is the key to happiness and a successful career.

Can you describe your area(s) of research interest?
Anything with molecular biology is my biggest passion.

Jumping deeper into that broad category, medicinal development, plant molecular biology, and genetics are where my true interests are. Modifying cells to understand how the complexities of their biology work and how treatments can create desired outcomes is very exciting.

How did you first become interested in this area of research? What was your “ah ha” moment?
During my PhD, I stumbled upon the use of a protein I was studying, which opened a pathway to the development of intellectual property.

What was your favourite project you’ve ever worked on? Why?
The development of intellectual property during my PhD.

This was my first step into the medicinal side of molecular biology and when I truly understood that most solutions to our global problems today lay in wait with research.

Molecular biology is a young and emerging field, and simply by studying and understanding the plants and animals around us, we can find solutions to almost anything.

Why is this area of research relevant for the ordinary citizen? What are the possible real-world applications?
We live in interesting times, where we have never relied so much on biology.

Molecular biology holds the secrets to new drugs and treatments, unlocking the potential of photosynthesis to develop novel power generation and provide solutions to climate change.

Everything we do in our lives has a root in biology, from agriculture, medicine, learning, and leisure activities.

Do you have another area of research that you’re currently not working on that you would like to?
As a molecular biologist, I have always used chemistry as a tool to achieve my outcomes.

Applied chemistry and biochemistry have intrigued me and is a field I have been moving into more and more every year. These fields would allow me to better utilize my skills and abilities to reach out further and build projects.

How do you keep current in your research area?
I always read and keep an eye on advances in research. As an educator, I am always looking for new and up-to-date material to incorporate into my lessons, which means I have to do routine literature searches.

I tend to gravitate to online resources where people share novel studies and discuss the science behind them.

What would you like to be the ultimate outcome of your research?
Ultimately, I want to make a positive impact on the world. I want to share my interest in biology with everyone and help advance our understanding of the natural world.

If you were forced to do something else for a living and could do anything, what would you like to do?
I would say becoming a chef.

Cooking is very similar to chemistry and research and a hands-on job.
And on top of that, you get to taste amazing dishes! I usually cook in my house, and it is fun to try new things and challenge myself, although my kids can be picky!

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I simply welcome learning anything possible. Learning is a lifelong career and a skill which you can always master.

I am truly happy with what I am currently doing. Teaching growing minds and being in the lab is what I have always wanted.

Applying molecular techniques to medicinal applications is a field I stepped into late in my education and is something I would always welcome to learn more about.

What is something you learned in the last week?
COVID-related research has dominated science for the last few years. But something that jumped out in my mind is related to some studies linking the use of cannabinoids in potentially treating COVID-19 pathology.

This research circles back to how the biology of things we have known for a long time still holds numerous mysteries and can take on novel uses in society.
